How to become a morning person

Want to wake up feeling refreshed, energized and ready to conquer the day? All of us wish we can be morning people. “How is it possible?? I am miserable everyday trying to drag my butt out of bed” you say. Well, it’s not actually as hard as you think. As a morning person myself, I can tell you that it’s a matter of building habits rather than using will power.

If you are serious about making a change to your how you start your day, here are 8 tips on how to slowly become a morning person.

1. Go to bed earlier

This is the number one rule! You cannot possibly wake up feeling refreshed without a good night’s rest. Aim for 8 hours of sleep everyday. Having a solid bed time routine is the prerequisite for a calm morning.

2. Let the light in

Replace your dark curtains with a slightly lightly colored one. Let the sunlight wake you up naturally in the morning. It’s a much calmer way to wake up than a jolting alarm clock. If you live in a room with very little light, consider getting a natural light alarm clock like the Philips Wake-Up Light. This clock will change the lighting in your room slowly, becoming brighter and brighter, to ease you to wake up. How cool is that?

3. Snooze or not snooze?

If you really struggle with waking up naturally, then it can’t be helped that you will need to use a sound alarm clock. Now here comes the big question, to snooze or not to snooze? Most people will tell you no. “It’s a terrible habit.” “You snooze, you lose.” etc. However, I think that snoozing once can actually help prepare you in getting up. Here’s how you do it, when that alarm goes off, go ahead and press that snooze button. Now, instead of falling back to unconsciousness, practice for the next 5-10 minutes. You should be awake by the time the next alarm come, maybe even before it goes off! See the next tip for more details on this technique.

4. Meditate first thing

What is this meditation you speak of? It’s really simple. While you are still lying in bed with your eyes closed, start focusing your attention on different parts of your body. Feets, legs, stomach, chest, arms. Feel the life energy inside those parts as intensely as you can. All the while, mind your breathing. Then, let your attention run through your whole body from head to toe like a wave. Watch yourself becoming awake. Open your eyes when you are ready.

5. Get up and stretch

Once you have gotten out of bed, do some slow stretches. Rotate your neck and shoulders, waist, reach out with your arms. With the mind and body awake now, you can now get ready for the day!

6. Make your bed

Always make your bed! It will give you an instant feeling of accomplishment that you are on top of things! Starting your morning organized will set you up for success for the rest of the day!

7. Have a morning playlist

A great way to pump yourself up is to play some uplifting music while you get ready. Dance/sing along while you brush your teeth, pick out your outfit, and eat breakfast. Mood booster guaranteed. The power of music people!

8. Look forward to breakfast

The best part about morning is no doubt breakfast! Make breakfast your favorite meal of the day and you will be looking forward to getting up. A fresh smoothie, some aromatic coffee, some buttery toast. Hmm I’m up!

When you can get up earlier, you will have so much more time in the day and feel productive af. It will take some time to adjust to a new routine. But with consistent practice, it will eventually become a habit and you won’t even have to think about it! Good luck!
